Recommended Reading for Auditioners and Aspiring Actors
1. Audition by Michael Shurtleff, with introduction by Bob Fosse. A must read for anyone interested in acting. A standard text for auditioning
2. Auditioning, An Actor Friendly Guide by Joanna Merlin with forward by Harold Prince A great section on stopping self sabotage – changing your attidtude about auditioning from fear to loving the experience.
3. Loving to Audition by Larry Silverberg. This is an actual workbook, with exercises and places to make notes about what you have learned. Larry Silverberg is also the author of a series of books on the Sanford Meisner technique that are in four volumes in workbook format. Excellent, readable and doable.
4. Tips for Actors by John Jory The former artistic director for the Actors Theater of Louisville and the Humana Festival of New Plays, Jory provides snippets of information. These bite-size gems of wisdom cover topics like Strategy, People stuff (how to work with other actors), Veterans (quotes from veteran actors) and a wonderful section called Stations of the Line that gives advice on the entire process from audition to closing night.
5. A Practical Handbook for the Actor by Melissa Bruder, Lee Michael Cohn, Madeleine Olnek, Nathaniel Pollak, Robert Previto and Scott Zigler. Simple short and sweet, this text began as a class assignment by David Mamet and turned into a book.
6. Theater Games for the Lone Actor, a Handbook by Viola Spolin New workbook that allows you to do some of the same acting class exercises that Spolin has made so popular at home – by yourself.
7. Theater Games for Young Performers by Maria C. Novelly Improvisations & Exercises
8. The Young Actors Workbook by Judith Roberts Seto A collection of scenes and monologues specifically for young actors with directions and tips.
9. ANYTHING AT ALL WRITTEN BY Viola Spolin. It’s all good, if you see it -- read it.
